Ensemble NACHT

Our story, members, and projects

"We are the children of the night. Playing, searching, exploring...dreaming."

Parallel Lines

Our Story

We are an ensemble of musicians, initiated by Leon Erdödy, from very different backgrounds, starting from early music, to contemporary experimental music, working together to achieve an artistic workflow and ensemble structure that enables us to be equals, establishing very low hierarchies from the start.

Starting out as an ensemble to realize a music theatre project, it quickly became clear that the shared love and appreciation for improvisation and experimental music as well as the interpersonal compatability would lead to a steady artistic flow, that resulted in the Ensemble NACHT.

Our artistic and educational work

We perform at various stages, incorporating our individual personalities into a whole.

Leon Erdödy started as an autodidact, with improvisation being a constant part of their artistic expression from the very beginning, which led to composition. Some of Leons first encounters with music and sound were free sessions on a synthesizer, that gave the possibility to work with sound itself, regardless of any musical system. This experience remained a constant influence.
After studying piano, further self education in the field of composition and music-theory, and enrolling in philosophy, Leon started a composition and music theory program at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
Due to early experiences with all kinds of art, and drawing from influences of diverse musical styles as well as other art forms and aesthetics, their work spans from contemporary music to experimental electronic music and live performance. This includes various projects such as ensemble and solo pieces, radio plays and experimental movies, with the goal to fuse visual media and other art forms with sound art.
